The arrest came after months of investigations into his alleged involvement in inciting violence, spreading disinformation, and organizing activities deemed to promote terrorism. Ekpa, who resides in Lahti, Finland, gained notoriety for issuing inflammatory directives from his social media platforms, urging his followers in Nigeria to enforce sit-at-home orders and other violent actions.

Finnish police stated that the charges against Ekpa include aggravated incitement against a group of people, funding terrorism, and other crimes against the public peace. His rhetoric and actions reportedly violated Finland's laws, which prohibit incitement to violence and hate speech.


Social Media as a Tool for Violence and Fear:

Simon Ekpa leveraged platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to spread messages promoting IPOB’s separatist ideology. After the arrest of IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Ekpa positioned himself as a central figure in the movement. One particularly chilling incident occurred in August 2023 when unidentified gunmen enforced a sit-at-home order in Enugu, leaving several people dead. Nigerian authorities believe Ekpa's directives directly emboldened these groups to carry out attacks on innocent civilians.


The Nigerian Government’s Response:

The Nigerian government has consistently condemned Ekpa’s actions, accusing him of using his foreign base to orchestrate violence in the country. Over the years, Nigeria’s security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), have worked closely with Interpol and Finnish authorities to investigate Ekpa’s activities.

In 2023, Nigeria formally petitioned Finland to act against Ekpa, citing evidence of his involvement in incitement and funding armed groups. Despite Finland’s strict free speech protections, authorities initiated investigations after mounting international pressure and growing evidence linking Ekpa to violence.

In addition, Nigerian security forces have intensified operations in the South-East to dismantle IPOB-affiliated armed groups and bring their sponsors to justice.
